Electricians in Braintree

Electricians for Braintree homes and businesses

Braintree mixes an old market town core with large estates built over the last few decades and a busy retail edge by the A120. Martin Kaine Electrical comes across from Colchester, about 15 miles west along the A120, for rewires, fuseboard upgrades, chargers and commercial jobs. Below is how the work tends to differ across the town.

Bocking and the older streets of the town

Bocking and the roads around the town centre hold some of Braintree's oldest homes, including timber-framed and Victorian properties. Wiring in these houses has often been altered by several owners, so it is common to find a mix of cable types and a fuse box that predates modern RCD protection. A proper inspection of the existing installation comes before any quote for new work.

  • Full or partial rewires planned room by room to limit disruption to plaster and floors
  • Replacing rewireable fuse boxes with metal-cased consumer units that meet current regulations
  • Care around exposed beams and older ceilings when choosing cable routes
  • Extra sockets and lighting circuits for homes that were wired for far less demand

Great Notley and the newer estates

Great Notley grew from the 1990s onwards and, along with other newer estates around Braintree, has a lot of family houses with driveways and decent gardens. Those homes rarely need rewiring, but owners often want to add to what is there. The usual requests are a car charger, a kitchen upgrade or lighting for the garden.

  • Smart EV chargers fitted to the house wall or a post by the driveway
  • Kitchen electrics for refits and knock-throughs, including new appliance circuits
  • Garden and patio lighting with properly protected outdoor cabling
  • Consumer unit checks where an extension has used up the board's spare ways

Retail and commercial units by the A120

The area around Braintree Village, the outlet centre on the old Freeport site, and the business areas near the A120 bring plenty of shop and unit work. Commercial jobs need planning around opening hours and the landlord's requirements. We handle lighting, power and distribution for small commercial premises across the town.

  • Lighting and small power for retail and trade units
  • New distribution boards and circuits for fit-outs and changes of use
  • Work scheduled around trading so customers are not disturbed
  • Certificates supplied for the landlord, insurer or building control

Questions

Common questions

Do you cover Great Notley and Rayne as well as Braintree town?

Yes. Great Notley, Rayne, Bocking and the rest of the Braintree area are all within our usual working range from Colchester. The A120 makes the trip straightforward.

Can you wire a retail or trade unit near Braintree Village?

We carry out commercial electrical work including lighting, power and distribution boards for shops and units. We will want to see the unit and understand the landlord's requirements before quoting.

My older Braintree house still has a fuse box with fuse wire. Is that a problem?

Rewireable fuses still work, but they give no RCD protection against electric shock. Replacing the board with a modern consumer unit is usually a sensible step, and we check the circuits behind it at the same time.
